Don't Forget About Your Roof
There’s a lot to love about life in the Lone Star State. The wide, open skies, the food, and our seriously underrated beaches all come to mind. However, with the good comes the bad, and unfortunately we have our host of problems in regards to roofing issues.
Roofing is unfortunately an often overlooked part of a house. Homeowners don’t usually know that there’s a problem with their roof until it starts leaking, and by then, there’s already a great deal of damage done. In the interest of keeping you informed, we’ve compiled a list of the three most common roofing issues that you’ll run into in the state of Texas.
1. Pests
Humans aren’t the only living things who call Texas home, and unfortunately a lot of these critters would love to make
your
home their home as well. Texas is host to a wide variety of invasive pests, and one of the most common entry points is through your roof. Paint, caulking, and shingles are pretty effective at keeping unwanted visitors out of your house, but since so much of your roof remains hidden from the ground level, damage can be hard to spot. Damaged or missing shingles can allow pests into your roof where they can cause serious damage.
Texas is Rife with Termites
One such pest that homeowners dread is the termite, and unfortunately Texas has among the most termites of anywhere in the country. While paint and shingles act as an effective barrier against termites, they will exploit any damage they find in order to gain entry, and from there they can cause thousands of dollars in damage before they are even discovered. Making sure that your roof is in good condition is essential to keeping them out.
It’s not just termites you need to look out for either. Carpenter ants, roof rats, and cockroaches will all gladly make your roof their home if they are able to gain entry. The key is to repair roof damage as quickly as possible to keep all pests in check.
2. Weather Damaged Shingles
We might not get the most rain in Texas, but the rainy season can be extremely rough on your roof. High winds can dislodge shingles and is one of the most common causes of roofing damage. Most shingles can withstand fairly high winds, but during extreme weather events, all bets are off. Shingles play an integral role in keeping the structure of your roof intact, so if enough are blown off, you’re looking at a perilous roofing situation.
Wind isn’t the only culprit behind roofing damage.
Texas set a state record for hail in 2021, and the damage that hail causes is nothing to sneeze at. Both shingles and the flashing around chimneys and vents can be destroyed when pummeled with hailstones, so it’s essential to have any hail damage diagnosed and repaired as quickly as possible.
The intense sun and UV radiation are also a contributing factor to the
degradation of roofing materials, especially in older roofs. If your shingles are brittle and rapidly deteriorating, especially in older roofs, they will need to be repaired.
3. Poorly Ventilated Roofs
The vents in your roof aren’t ornamental, they play an important role in keeping your roof free from mold and mildew that can grow to infest the wood throughout your house. Your roof gets extremely hot under the sun even on cooler days. This heat radiates into your attic and becomes a sink for ambient moisture. Ventilation is extremely important for your roof as it provides fresh air that disperses the humidity that mold and mildew need in order to thrive. If your roof has inadequate ventilation, that is an issue that should be addressed as soon as possible.
